Kilwinning Amateur Prize Flute Band

Kilwinning Flute Band was formed in 1907 and was then known as Elington Iron Works Fife and Drum.

The Band was formed by Iron Workers and Miners from the now defunct Elington Pit. Some of the original constitution and rules from this band are still in use today.

During 1914-18 war the band was disbanded and although they have some historical notes from the period, very little is known about the band except having played every year at the Elington Show and Tourney.

1952 saw the reformation of Kilwinning Flute Band which is now called Kilwinning Amateur Prize Flute Band. The founder members included James Young, Alexander Montgomery and John (Big Jock) Gilmour. They in turn employed the services of Mr Jas Malcolmson and Alexander Hodge who together took the band from 4th Grade to winning 1st Grade in four consecutive years; the only band ever to have done this.

Their next conductor was a natural progression to Andy Parker. He was a strict disciplinarian and standards were kept very high. Although there were never any 1st prizes there were many 2nd and 3rd.

Following Andy as conductor came, one of the best flute players in the world, Adam Bennett. Adam won the Solo Championships at the small ensemble contest five times and also guested with the Scottish and BBC Symphony Orchestras. Adam died at the age of 56 and at the peak of his career.

To follow in Adams footsteps was a hard act and the job of teaching fell to William J. Young. Their first set of C and G flutes were bought from Motherwell Old Comrades. Under William’s tuition they have won the Scottish Amateur Flute Band Association March Contest, guest conductor being Andrew Young.

During the past years, the Dreghorn Musical Society and Kilwinning band have joined forces and carried out a number of concerts in aid of various charities.

The 90’s saw many changes within the band including the buying of our own premises from the British Legion and our first contest visit to Northern Ireland and the Portrush Masters.
