Ballywillan Flute Band

Ballywillan Flute Band was founded in 1884 by men from Portrush and surrounding areas. Initially a 1st Flute Band, part music was introduced after the War years. The band has strong links with the Loyal organisations at Ballywillan and hold their weekly practice in Ballywillan Orange Hall.

During the summer months the distinctive blue uniforms of Ballywillan are a familiar sight along the Causeway Coast. The band can often be seen performing for the tourists at Open Air Concerts, taking part in Royal National Lifeboat Institution events at the quayside or on parade with the Royal British Legion and other local organisations.

On the stage Ballywillan have been successful in national contests at Grade 2 and 3 levels. One of the most memorable achievements being in 2002 when they gained 1st Place in the Scottish March Contest and 3rd place overall. Conductors over the years have included George Wilson, Brian McAllister, Alex Abbott and Roger Dallas.

Ballywillan has played it’s part in the promotion of flute bands. In 1987 the band staged their first “Portrush Masters” Entertainment Contest. Many will recall the many happy day’s in the Northern Counties Hotel and the Causeway Coast Hotel.
